It happens all the time. You go into one of your favourite shops and hear the offer over the public address system: ‘An extra 10% off today if you apply for one of our store cards.’ This seems like a good idea for people who shop regularly in a particular place but there are a number of reasons to be careful about applying for store cards.

When Is A Store Card Not A Store Card?

First of all, the name ’store card’ is misleading. It makes them sound friendly. But store cards are another form of credit card. Like credit cards, people can use store cards to defer payment for purchases. Like credit cards, store cards charge interest on uncleared balances. And like credit cards, people have to apply for them.

Although it can be tempting to have a store card for each place you shop in, people should avoid this temptation. Every store card application will become part of your credit history. People who make more than three applications within a seven month period are likely to be turned down for some cards. This will adversely affect their credit rating.

Store Card Interest Rates

A key difference between store cards and credit cards is the interest-free period. While credit cards typically have interest-free periods of up to 56 days, many store cards have none. People pay interest on the debt from the day it goes on the card.

What is worse, the interest rates on most store cards are very high. The Competition Commission recently said that British consumers were being overcharged by £100 million a year due to the high interest rates. In fact, the Commission suggested that store cards should carry a ‘wealth warning’.

Interest rates on normal credit cards typically range between 8% and 20%. In contrast, store card interest rates are usually around 30%. This makes a tremendous difference when paying back a debt.

Other Store Card Fees

Store cards also charge high late payment fees, making them very expensive for consumers. And the payment protection insurance offered by many cards may be higher than that charged on regular credit cards.

Not all store cards fall into this category. There are some retail outlets that offer cards with similar rates to regular credit cards. Store cards that are badged by the retail outlet but issued by a bank may also have competitive interest rates.

Getting The Best From Store Cards

With high interest rates and low interest free periods, it is easy for consumers to pay over the odds for store card credit. To avoid this, it’s best to:

- Read the fine print to see what rate of interest applies to the card. This will be listed under the heading ‘typical APR’
- Check whether there is an interest free period
- Pay off the outstanding balance within a month

Another option is to avoid the store card and use another credit card with a better interest rate.

The Internet is full of ads for work at home opportunities promising you thousands of dollars a month for staying at home while doing little or no work. If you are struggling financially, as so many people are, these ads sound like the answer to your dreams.

If you are thinking about investing your time or money in any of these ads, proceed with caution. Not all work at home opportunities deliver on their promises. In fact, a large percentage of them are scams and should be avoided.

Most advertisements for these opportunities deliberately omit certain facts, including only the information that will draw your attention. There is no mention of how many hours you will need to devote to the program or what the total investment costs may be.

Many work at home schemes require you to cover the costs of placing newspaper ads, buying office supplies, etc. This is in addition to whatever start-up fee or initial investment is required. Many people lose thousands of dollars plus their time and energy because they fall prey to these schemes.

There are many of these work at home scams floating around on the Internet. Some of them are listed below:

ASSEMBLY OR CRAFT WORK: Most of these programs tell you how easy it is to produce goods for a company that promises to buy them from you once you complete them, thus earning you a nice weekly income. They fail to tell you how many hours are required in order to produce those items or how much of your money is required as an investment in equipment or supplies, sometimes adding up to hundreds of dollars.

An example of this is a company that pays you to make aprons. You need to either have a sewing machine or purchase one. You may also be required to buy materials to make your aprons. However, after you purchase the materials and equipment and perform the work required, you are not paid.

How can they get away with this? They tell you the work does not meet their “quality standards.” Unfortunately, no work ever done by anyone is “up to standard” leaving you with a loss of income and investment. If you want to sell the items you have made, you are forced to find your own customers.

CHAIN LETTERS: Ads for chain letters tell you to make copies of a certain letter and send that letter to people whose names and addresses are provided. All you are required to do is send ten dollars for a mailing list and labels. You are then shown a chart to see how you can automatically receive thousands of dollars.

In reality, the only people who ever make any money from chain letters are the ones who are at the top of the chain who, by the way, are continually changing names and post office boxes. The person who sends you the chain letter tries to pull you in by claiming to be a successful lawyer who does this on the side and who assures you that there is nothing illegal about chain letters.

ENVELOPE STUFFING: Ads for envelope stuffing have been around for years in various formats. The basic claim is that for a fee, you will be provided with directions to earn money from home simply by stuffing envelopes.

After you make the initial investment, you discover there was never any real employment offer. Instead, you are told how to place ads in newspapers, magazines, online classifieds, etc. The only way for you to earn money is if people respond to your ads.

MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING: Ads for MLM programs tell you how you can earn more money than you have ever had in your life. By joining their program it will be possible for you to let others earn money for you while you enjoy your prosperous lifestyle!

Multi-level marketing is a business based on direct sales. It is a solid, well-established, legal form of business that has provided profit for many people who have successfully sold products for reputable companies.

Many illegal pyramid schemes can resemble these legitimate MLM programs. The difference is that instead of selling a product, your primary goal is to recruit others into the program. At some point, everything collapses because the market becomes saturated and only a few people at the top have made money.

MEDICAL BILLING: Ads for medical billing are in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet. The sales pitch says there is a crisis in the health care industry due to the massive task of processing paper claims. Since only a small fraction of the claims are fulfilled electronically, the opportunities in this area are huge.

Supposedly, doctors want to contract out their billing services to save money. This means you should be able to earn a sizable income working from home providing services like billing and accounts receivable. No experience is required and you will be provided with clients. Unfortunately, the reality is that you have to do the selling yourself.

Very few people who invest in a medical billing business are able to find clients and generate an income, let alone recover their investments. The competition in this market is brutal and primarily centers on a few large companies.

Before making any investments in any companies, ask questions, specifically regarding investment amounts and the requirements for running the business. Insist upon receiving contact information for references. Contact those references and speak to them, preferably in person.

If you invest in any work at home opportunity and find that it is not legitimate, contact the company and ask for a refund. If they will not honor your request, find out the physical address and contact information of the company. You can then make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your local Attorney General’s office. You can also find out if any other complaints have been received for that company.

Virus infection on your computer may cause a very serious damage and even loss on your business. You can just imagine it may wreck your system registry or your entire computer (with all your receivables data on it!) or all your HTML programs! It will come to total black out screen, it will not boot at all. But that is actually the worse scenario that may happen. Are you going to wait for this worse scenario in your life to happen? I guess NOT, right?

Here are the 10 smart ways that I personally do to protect my computers against viruses, malicious dialers and spywares.

(1)If you are using Windows XP, always turn on the firewall.

(2)Always run all necessary latest updates & service packs (all windows! including all your programs & software!—keep them updated)

(3)Run your anti-virus program everyday (some do it every week) There are many virus programs that you can get for free scanning.

(4)Run your anti-spyware/adaware once a week (I run Spybot Search & Destroy & Lavasoft Adware Personal — they are shareware, meaning it’s free!). What I do is that, I run the Lavasoft Adware first, then run the Spybot Search and Destroy (I also run it with “immunize” tool). These two tools are always on top of my desktop for easy access.

(5)Turn on the pop-up blocker - this feature is available on Windows XP (you can see this under tools>Internet Options >Privacy>click Block Pop Ups. In addition to this, I also download another pop up blocker, the Google Toolbar. I find their pop up blocker the most effective in blocking pop ups.

(6)Never open mails that are suspicious to you or not known to you. If they are in your bulk mail, send it back to your provider as “spam”! I never enable my bulk mail. I automatically delete emails from my bulk mail.

(7)When using messenger (IM) services, be very careful with files being sent through instant messenger. Rather choose to have it emailed it to you. Most of email services now has virus check and clears it if the file has virus or not.

(8)Be very careful when downloading files or any programs from the internet, pay attention on the instructions while downloading it. Downloading may sometimes cause error on the system registry or the entire computer system (one example, my nephew got his computer badly infected with viruses because of heavy downloading of games and music! - I guess!)

(9)Be careful with files that come from a floppy disk or any other external storage when you open it in your CD ROM of floppy drive. You should know its source, or better yet, when you insert it, have it scanned with your anti-virus program before you open the files.

(10)Run defragmentation, disk clean up, registry scanner at least once a week. You can find defragmentation by simply pointing your mouse on drive C: (which is usually the hard disk main logical drive)> right click the mouse>click on properties>click on tools>click on defragment now!

There are so many shareware on the internet that you can get for free! (that is the reason it is a shareware!). Keeping your computer healthy can make you more productive (if you have a business!) or it will make you enjoy more surfing and browsing the internet!

You need a medium that is immediate, personal, trackable and talks with those who are anxious to hear from you. That medium is email marketing. It is the strongest and fastest growing marketing tool available today. Big companies are moving money away from TV, print and radio and moving it into email campaigns. Why? Because it works.

Consider this:

82% of email users have purchased a product because of an email offer.

US online agency Doubleclick predicts a rise of 17% in email marketing budgets in the US. TV, print and radio and predicted to decrease.

Microsoft sends out more than 20 million email marketing pieces every month.

Permission based email marketing campaigns can provide marketers with reports on their markets they only dreamed of before. This allows them to cut down on wastage and niche more meaningful offers with the obvious benefit of better returns for effort and investment.

A Price Waterhouse Coopers survey found 83 percent of Internet users felt email was their primary reason for using the Internet. Given the choice, an overwhelming majority turned down books, radios, and televisions in favor of an Internet connection with email on a desert island.

Ask a different research company and you will get a different answer for the average response rate of opt-in email campaigns. Jupiter Communications will tell you 5 to 15 percent. Forrester will tell you 14 to 22 percent. Ask a different email marketer and get a different answer. Some are getting only 3 percent and some are getting 40 percent. But they all agree on three things: It’s not very expensive, it’s not very hard, and it’s got a better return on investment than other marketing and advertising techniques.

Quit trying to win a new game with old weapons. Build an email list, watch it grow even bigger, use it to share useful information and watch your profits grow.

Metadata by definition is data about data. It leaves an electronic trail of all the changes to an electronic document: the edits, authors, times and dates of access and changes, as well as routing information. Meta data can tell you:

? Who said what?
? Who knew what?
? Who did what?
? How much time was spent editing the document?
? Who created the document?
? Where the document has been?
? How many times the document was edited?
? If and by whom the document has been printed?
? Private comments and prior drafts of the document

Metadata is hidden information embedded in many electronic applications, including WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. This data can contain sensitive information, which you would not want disclosed to third parties. Much of this information is invisible to routine users, is created automatically and cannot be prevented.

Even if a document is password-protected, a significant amount of metadata can be discerned even though the document itself cannot be opened. A civil litigation lawyer can use metadata as an effective cross examination tool.

Why civil litigation lawyers and accountants want to know about metadata:

Civil litigators are increasingly sending documents by e-mail during negotiations and discovery. More civil litigation lawyers are realizing the vulnerability of sharing electronic data with clients, opposing counsel and courts.

Your firm can aggressively use metadata on opposing counsel and their clients and others can use it against you. This puts your client relations in danger. By inadvertently revealing private information contained in metadata, you would breach attorney client privilege.

The most common way to protect against metadata is to not copy and paste from one document to the next. Make sure “turn off fast saves” is selected in Microsoft products. Make sure to either accept or reject all changes to a document, if “track changes are turned on.” It is also a good idea once your document is complete, that it be converted into a PDF document. PDF files retain much less metadata than other document forms, especially those created by Microsoft. Yet another bleak new book about the end of life on the earth has emerged from the darkling presses, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Unnfortunately, the author skips something that has not yet occurred: the beginning of life on earth.

In the book, a father and son, who are survivors of a nuclear apocalypse, walk amid the ruins of what once was supposed to be life on earth, while other marauding survivors drift by in neo-primitive regalia, practicing such unappetizing indulgences as cannibalism.

The father’s goal is to save his son, and the son may be the messiah. It’s all, as usual with such glum rants, nebulously eschatological.

While we’re always willing, with some remorse, to peruse yet one more vision of the ultimate nightmare become reality, we do wish somebody would take a moment to point out an incidental obstacle to the experience of utter hopelessness.

To wit: while the other creatures of the earth seem to be doing just fine, except for how humanity depredates and occasionally annihilates them, anybody who observes the doings of the human race detects that from time immemorial it is the behavior of a species that, for the most part, is struggling with an enormous disjunction with life itself.

The entire tumultuous agony we sorrowfully refer to as history or lament as current events is precipitated by short-term compulsions or nihilistic flagrances. If these continue, there is little doubt that the angst-driven participants will one day walk off a cliff without even caring, in the middle of their moronic contending, that they’re getting close to the precipice.

Now, let’s take a look at how life might actually get started, specifically human life, since the other creatures haven’t had the opportunity to be subjective about their participation in it. They just seem quite content to do what comes naturally.

Imagine, instead of the usual rancorous and despairing parade of human behavior, we were a species that had finally settled into life with a long and appreciative vision of it. To enable such a revolution in human perspective, we would have to realize, of all things, that we’re fortunate indeed to have a chance to inhabit the glorious earth, even if not for an eternity, but for our fitting individual and collective place in its overall lifespan.

We would be at peace, instead of in turmoil. We would be at home, instead of just passing through or despairing in what, we perceive, is meaningless drudgery.

Then we would, we assume, know to enjoy life’s blessings while we preserve the unfathomable gift for ourselves and for generations to come.

We would live in the service of life, instead of in disjunction with it. Instead of dismissing it as something unworthy that we might in our negligence devastate, we would embrace it as something invaluable that we would, with all our beings, preserve and delight in. And we would know such life-embracing behavior is the ultimate way to satisfy both our finite and our infinite longings.

There you have the view from the other end of the telescope, which is a wonderfully comforting place from which to leaf through yet one more dreadful vision of what our maladjustment to life might yet wreak.

So before we go and terminate human life, here’s hoping we give it a chance to get started.
